This striking, hyper-realistic oil on canvas commands attention with a subject that is simultaneously iconic and historically final. It is not just a painting of a queen; it is a meticulous, monumental rendering of the *Machin* definitive stamp.
The Machin series, named after its designer, sculptor Arnold Machin, is arguably the most reproduced work of art in history. Since its introduction in 1967, Machin's sculpted bas-relief portrait of Queen Elizabeth II in profile, wearing the George IV State Diadem, served as the immutable face of British postage. The Queen herself reportedly preferred this classic profile and resisted updating it over her seven-decade reign, making it a powerful and constant symbol of continuity.
This painting elevates the miniature, mass-produced object into a unique and powerful artifact. The artist has magnified a particular £3 denomination (issued just before the decimalization transition), capturing with breathtaking clarity the texture of the perforated edge, the specific 'old money' typography, and, most crucially, the three-dimensional qualities of Machin's original sculpture from which the stamp was engraved.
For over 50 years, the Machin design was considered "endless," seemingly outside of time. However, following the passing of Queen Elizabeth II in 2022 and the ascension of King Charles III, the transition to a new definitive design (featuring his profile without a crown) has made the Machin series definitive in a new way—a historical, completed volume.
In this context, the painting functions as a profound vanitas. Its hyper-realism does not depict a moment in time, but rather, memorializes a pervasive visual continuity that has now ended. The work transforms the humble postage stamp from a tool of commerce into an enduring historical monument.

The Machin series of postage stamps was the main definitive stamp series in the United Kingdom for most of the reign of Elizabeth II, from 1967 until her death in 2022. Introduced on 5 June 1967, it was the second series of her reign, replacing the Wilding series. The last issue was on 4 April 2022, four months before the Queen's death on 8 September.
Designed by Arnold Machin, the stamps consist simply of the sculpted profile of the Queen and a denomination, and are almost always in a single colour.
After five decades of service, the series has encompassed almost all changes and innovations in British stamp printing. This has encouraged an abundant specialised philatelic collectors' market and associated literature.
Arnold Machin's 1964 effigy of Elizabeth II was replaced on British coins in 1984 by an older-looking portrayal by Raphael Maklouf. However, the Queen's likeness on British definitive stamps was not replaced after 1967, and she herself rejected the last proposals to replace them.
