Here at Canvas & Bronze, we have spent over 35 years traveling around the world building a collection that is full of unique art for collectors, including numerous examples of high-quality cloth artworks. Our fabric art pieces are all unique but they have been curated for collectors who like to enjoy a certain level of connection to the art they own. Our experience with tapestries, fiber art and textile wall hangings of all kinds means that we have curated a singular collection of art on cloth that speaks to collectors in a truly meaningful way.

  • Varied Fabric Art Pieces From Global Artists

If you are interested in collecting fabric art pieces for your home, workplace, or to give as a unique present, then you should find out more about the artists we showcase. The textile art we have at our San Francisco gallery is made in various global traditions, sometimes offering unique insights into a particular country's heritage. Whether the cloth artworks we have are traditional or push new boundaries, they all have something to say and often do so in new ways when displayed in new contexts.

Art on Cloth Works to Suit Any Setting

From contemporary embroidered artwork to traditional tapestries, Canvas & Bronze has something to suit every kind of art collector. We have textile wall hangings that work well as statement pieces and we also have smaller, more refined pieces of woven art for more subtle – but no less resonant – expressions of visual and tactile art. Our unique and original fabric art pieces are truly individual. We offer in-person viewings of all our art on cloth by appointment.

    Caring for Fabric Art Pieces

Cloth artworks require some maintenance, something that is true of all original works of art. Dusting and cleaning requirements are minimal but you should be prepared to remove debris with a soft brush or a microfiber cloth once in a while. Some pieces will be suited to a low-suction vacuum clean and we can advise you on whether this would be an appropriate course of action for particular pieces. Water and chemicals should be avoided unless you have consulted a professional restorer. Roll rather than fold tapestries and other textile wall hangings to prevent creasing when works are being transported.

Where is it best to mount textile wall hangings?

Like artworks on canvas, it is best to choose a wall which is not exposed to too much direct sunlight during the day for all cloth artworks. UV exposure and temperature fluctuations can impact on the longevity of art on cloth, so mounting above a fireplace or a radiator is also best avoided. Eye-level is best, but you can mount textile wall hangings higher up in rooms with high ceilings.

    What is embroidered artwork?

Embroidery is a type of textile art that is created with a needle and thread through cloth. Embroidered artwork has a long history in numerous global traditions. Tapestries and table runners are traditional pieces of embroidered artwork. Contemporary fiber art often includes a narrative element and this is also part of the tradition.

What is the difference between tapestries and woven art more generally?

Tapestries are a specific type of woven art, one in which the design is created as part of the weaving process itself. Tapestries use a weft-faced weave to form a pattern or image as the cloth is woven. On the other hand, woven art, more generally can utilize other weaving techniques found outside of tapestry, such as plain, jacquard or twill weaves.
