"Icon Russia I" presents a remarkable feast day calendar icon depicting the most important Orthodox liturgical celebrations. The meticulously organized panels create a sacred narrative centered around the Easter resurrection scene, with each surrounding vignette illustrating a significant holy day in the church calendar. The rich palette of vermilion reds against deep greens and browns creates a vibrant yet reverent visual rhythm.

About Artwork: Icon Russia I

This second half of the 19th-century icon from Central Russia employs traditional tempera paint on a wooden panel. The composition's grid-like arrangement serves both devotional and educational purposes, allowing worshippers to contemplate the cycle of church holidays throughout the liturgical year. Discovered in Budapest, the icon demonstrates the enduring techniques of Russian Orthodox sacred art, with its distinctive stylized figures, symbolic coloration, and Cyrillic text inscriptions framing the painted surface.
