Canis Nobilis: The Sighthound Reliquary (reclaimed cigar box)

Canis Nobilis: The Sighthound Reliquary is an assemblage decorative box that transforms artisan tobacciana into a tribute to classical canine portraiture. Constructed from a repurposed cedar casing originally crafted by My Father Cigars in Estelí, Nicaragua, the piece merges traditional woodwork with antique ephemera and European graphic arts. The exterior lid presents a central mixed-media composition anchored by a poised sighthound, rendered in an athletic, aristocratic stance reminiscent of 19th-century sporting lithographs. This central motif is overlaid against layered vintage typography, postal cancellations, and distressed French print motifs—most notably the typographic echoes of "Prestige" and "Renversant"—evoking the aesthetic of antique journals and continental parcel labels. Elevated upon four ornate, cast-metal rococo feet, the box features a decorative brass swing clasp on the front rail. When opened, the interior lid reveals a matching canine tableau framed in warm bookcloth borders, overlooking an earth-toned felt basin designed to protect keepsakes, jewelry, or collector’s curios. Retaining its original factory hot-stamp branding and hand-rolled production dates on the underside, the work balances historical provenance with bespoke decorative craft.
