García de Marina

García de Marina, a contemporary artist born in Gijón, Spain in 1975, has used everyday objects as his primary medium since 2011. His work transforms the prosaic into powerful symbolic narratives, exploring the hidden poetry of ordinary things through minimal, surrealist-influenced compositions. The artist never titles his works and eschews digital manipulation, allowing objects stripped of their original function to carry emotion and meaning within stark, precisely constructed scenes.

García de Marina's practice is deliberately irreverent with reality, revealing the grandeur of the everyday through physical transformation and unexpected perspective. His artistic philosophy centers on intuition and essentiality, creating open interpretations that invite viewers to construct their own meanings. Over the past decade, he has built an impressive international presence, with work shown across five continents in prestigious institutions including the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Castilla y León (MUSAC), the Erarta Museum in Saint Petersburg, and the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes in Havana—which granted him its first-ever retrospective for a Spanish photographer in 2024. His historic 2021 collaboration with the Spanish postal service produced the world's first official stamp dedicated to mail art, and his participation in major photography festivals spans from Washington D.C. to Myanmar, establishing him as a significant voice in contemporary visual poetry.
