Fratelli Fabbri

Fratelli Fabbri Editori, founded in 1947 by brothers Giovanni, Dino, and Ettore 'Rino' Fabbri, is an Italian publishing house that revolutionized the industry with its innovative approach to book distribution and content creation. From humble beginnings rooted in a love for art and culture, the Fabbri brothers built an empire that would eventually reach millions of readers worldwide.

A Legacy of Innovation

The Fabbri brothers' publishing philosophy was characterized by a commitment to making knowledge accessible to the masses. Their groundbreaking approach included:

  1. Installment-based sales: By offering books in installments through newsstands, Fratelli Fabbri Editori made high-quality publications affordable for a wider audience.
  2. Multimedia integration: The company pioneered the combination of books and records, creating innovative series like ""The Stories of Sound"" and ""The History of Music.""
  3. International reach: Fabbri's publications were translated into 14 languages, including Hindi, Urdu, and Afrikaans, allowing them to penetrate diverse markets globally.

From Textbooks to Encyclopedias

Initially focusing on school textbooks, Fratelli Fabbri Editori quickly expanded its repertoire. The company's breakthrough came with the publication of large classical works like the Divine Comedy and the Bible, setting new standards in print quality.

The 1958 release of "Conoscere," an illustrated encyclopedia for children, marked a significant milestone. This publication alone sold approximately 3 million copies and became a staple in Italian households.

Challenges and Transitions

Despite its immense success, Fratelli Fabbri Editori faced challenges in the late 1960s due to market saturation and social unrest. This led to organizational changes, with Dino and Rino Fabbri selling their shares. In 1971, the Istituto Finanziario Industriale (IFI) acquired a majority stake in the company on behalf of the Agnelli family. Despite these changes, Giovanni Fabbri remained as chairman, ensuring continuity in the company's vision.

Legacy and Current Status

Today, Fratelli Fabbri Editori continues to be a respected name in Italian publishing. As part of Rizzoli Libri, which is now controlled by Arnoldo Mondadori Editore, the company maintains its commitment to producing high-quality educational materials and publications.

The Fabbri brothers' innovative spirit lives on in the company's ongoing efforts to adapt to changing markets, including ventures into home video distribution and partnerships with various media outlets.
