Overview
In You’ll Adore, Jay Kelly presents a monumental exploration of form, fashion, and the fragmented nature of memory. Standing at a commanding five-foot square, this large-scale collage transforms the silhouette of a classic mid-century ballgown into a shimmering, kaleidoscopic tapestry. While the profile of the figure—draped in an elegant bodice and voluminous skirt with opera-length gloves—evokes a sense of vintage Hollywood glamour, the true soul of the piece lies in its meticulous internal architecture.
The Materiality of Memory
Kelly’s process involves a sophisticated layering of thousands of individual paper fragments, each treated with a high-gloss varnish that grants the panel a depth comparable to glass or polished stone. From a distance, the eye perceives a grand, shimmering gown against a void-like black background. As the viewer approaches, the image "shatters" into a narrative mosaic.
The dress is composed of disparate elements: vintage editorial clippings, hints of botanical illustrations, and flashes of contemporary typography. This juxtaposition suggests that our identities—and the "glamour" we project—are often a composite of cultural artifacts and fleeting moments pinned together by the passage of time.
Composition & Depth
The 60" x 60" format allows for a physical immersion. Kelly utilizes the inherent tension between the flat panel and the high-varnish finish to create a "shadowbox" effect. The dark, matte negative space pushes the central figure forward, while the varying thickness of the collaged layers creates a subtle, tactile relief.
The light does not merely hit the surface of You’ll Adore; it travels through the varnish, illuminating the lower strata of the collage and giving the gown an internal luminescence. This interplay between the light and the layered paper creates a sense of kinetic energy, as if the figure is caught in a mid-turn, forever poised between history and the present.
Curatorial Note
You’ll Adore is a masterclass in scale and precision. It challenges the viewer to reconcile the grand gesture of the silhouette with the intimate chaos of the collage. It is a celebratory yet complex piece that asks us to consider what we truly adore: the finished image of elegance, or the beautiful, messy pieces that make it whole.
This artwork works particularly well with our Vogue Magazine Audrey Hepburn artwork.
