The Artistic Journey of Prabin Badhia
Prabin Badhia is a contemporary artist based in Emeryville, California, whose work primarily focuses on the human form. Born in India, Badhia pursued formal art education, earning a Bachelor's Degree in Fine Art from Berhampur University in Orissa, India in 1984, followed by a Master's Degree in History of Art from the National Museum in New Delhi in 1992.
Since 1999, he has been living in Emeryville with his wife and daughter, establishing himself as a significant presence in the local art community as a member artist of the 4th Street Studio in Berkeley, California.
Badhia's Artistic Philosophy
Badhia's work, exemplified by the vibrant red painting shown in the image, explores the human form with a focus on structure, muscles, and movement. In his own words, he approaches his art "with no regard for any pre-condition," creating figures that are "purely form" without historical context or social narrative. This deliberate absence of temporal and geographical specificity allows viewers to engage directly with the physical expressiveness of his subjects.
As he states, "I enjoy the structure, the muscles, and movement, bending, twisting, and turning of the body forms," a philosophy clearly evident in the dynamic composition and bold color choices seen in his work.
