In Aerie, Northern California painter Rachel Sager continues her rigorous investigation into environmental flux, geologic memory, and physical threshold. Measuring an intimate yet resonant 24 by 24 inches, the composition anchors itself to the concept of the high-altitude perch—a vantage suspended between terra firma and atmospheric dissolution.
Working within the tradition of contemporary atmospheric abstraction, Sager treats the canvas as a site of transformation. Ethereal passages of diaphanous glaze meet deliberate, tactile marks, evoking the raw updrafts, craggy fissures, and rarefied light of an alpine roost. Her mark-making captures both incandescent beauty and underlying tension: pigment gathers along tectonic fault lines before fracturing into shimmering, tonal expanses. Aerie refuses static horizon lines, instead inviting the viewer into a meditative state where aerial perspective converges with psychological introspection.
